Reconciling Indices

January 4, 2001

By, Barclay T. Leib

What was the year 2000? The beginning of a massive multi-year decline, or just a 4th wave headache to grind through? What does the first half of 2001 hold in store for the markets? Could the Dow vault to new all-time highs, and if so, what does that mean for the Nasdaq?

We certainly don't have all the answers, but we did make some good broad brush calls last year -- turning aggressively bearish last February, neutral in late May, and then decidedly bearish again between September and early December. We've now been neutral since the first week of December, but stand ready to set out a preliminary expected path for early 2001.
