The Chart du Jour

Significant Dates

October 6, 2000

By, Barclay T. Leib

Half the equity world has experienced fatal blows worse than the devastation of the 1987 Crash. The other half hasn't even begun. "Jump moves" continue to abound, only now we are starting to compress a bit. Dell doesn't drop $12-$15 anymore on bad news, just $3. And Priceline.com only has $5 or so dollars left to go.

But elsewhere, if you were in a complete vacuum, looking only at stocks like Citigroup, American Express and GE, or maybe Fannie Mae or Aflac -- things couldn't be looking rosier -- at least for now. But is that about to change? Can financial stocks remain a safe haven amidst the carnage of tech?

In this month's subscriber-only article, we close by presenting a number of individual equity chart patterns that we find of interest, but we open by looking at some Fibonacci date work pointing to a period of great significance. We think it will be a tradable low. It is also important to keep this window of time in mind so as not to inadvertantly try to pick a bottom prematurely in front of it. Potential crash like conditions still prevail despite the occasional tempting sharp reversals and false bottoms we encounter along the way. It is only as we enter this latter window of time that we will be more attentive for the equity averages to form a more lasting low.
