Are We Becoming Mainstream?
February 4, 2003
by, Barclay T. Leib
We have upon occasion on this website written about popular movies of the day being reflective of society and market emotions. Mary Poppins captured the public's attention in the most ebulient year of 1969 when it was first released, while the Texas Chain Saw Massacre did the same during the 1973-1974 bear market. Boiler Room apeared just as the hype of NASDAQ's go-go 1999 was about to abate and show its true pump-and-dump Wall Street stripes. And more recently, the dour good-versus-evil tale of Lord of the Rings just happened to get produced as the U.S. is confronting Saddam Hussein and the "Axis of Evil."
So it is that this season's newest popular movie appears set to be "Pi." Please see the attached Sundance Film Festival review of this film that a reader was so kind to forward to us.
Is Sandspring.com and our vision of pi as an important cyclical feature of market bahavior becoming this mainstream? In any case, it sounds like a fun movie -- once again reflective of real-life societal trends.
Subsequent to posting the commentary above, several readers have written us to comment that the movie "Pi" -- while well-made -- actually appeared back in 1998. While I could have sworn to have recently seen a trailer for some new version of this film in a local theatre, let us offer our apologies if I was mistaken.
